I know that many people who read this blog aren’t on my email list…..so I wanted to share this simple, exciting, enlightening and exhilarating exercise for picking a niche that CAN transform your life, your focus and your sense of passion and purpose…..all in about 5 minutes.

It is….i can confidently state with 100% certainly – the only niche picking exercise you’ll ever need to do.

It’s not mine – it’s actually a well known exercise that has been re-imagined many times by many people – and the first time I saw it live –  demonstrated by Adam Leipzig – a hollywood film executive, I knew it was something I needed to do.

There are 5  questions – and it’s brilliance is not in it’s extravagance or powerful promise…..but instead, in it’s beautiful and poetic simplicity.

[stag_alert style=”grey”] Who are you? What do you love to do? Who will you do it for? What do these people really WANT and need? How do their lives change OR transform once they have you do it?[/stag_alert]

What are you uniquely qualified to teach other people in way that inspires you and allows your audience to become better at putting THEIR best work into the world as a result?

Feel free to add detail, depth and dimension to whatever discoveries arise.

  1. Who is your perfect client or customer?

  2. What do they look like?

  3. What do they sound like?

  4. What do they really want and need?

  5. Why are you uniquely qualified to give it to them?

  6. And how are they forever changed by having you help them go, grow and flow in the direction of their dreams?

For many of you…working in the real world – these questions offer uncomfortable answers.

You may KNOW who you are – and be  DOING what you love – but doing it for people who don’t appreciate it – don’t need it – and their lives change only insofar as the latitude you offer them to laze and haze their way through their own days because you are as good as you are at your own job.

I know many people – PASSIONATE people reading this very words….right now  – stuck in dead end jobs for under appreciative employers – selfish customers and clueless clients who don’t get the beauty and brilliance of YOUR very best.

And that sucks.

But it’s not their fault.

It’s up to you to change that.

And…..if you’ve read this far – I’d like to offer some unplanned personal thoughts I don’t usually share – some philosophical musings on why this stuff matters so much in the first place.

Because it’s not about what we do for a living – it’s about how we LIVE.

What we focus on – and how we spend these amazing years of opportunity that each of us – you – me – all of us – are really so fortunate to have in front of us.

And whether you spend another year repeating the same sad slog, or whether you do something RADICALLY new and different and exhilarating and inspiring – you are always engaged in the act of choosing.

Make no mistake – that much is on you.

It doesn’t mean you have to change who you are – it only means you have to change who you do it for…..maybe, starting by doing it for YOU, first.

I get up every day with the intention of serving.

I have clients who are counting on me – appointments, obligations and commitments to keep.
But no matter how many people I may be working with……..that audience who I serve FIRST, always has to start with me.

Because at the end of the day – or the beginning – at both ends – we are, as the great poem tells us –  masters of our fate and captains of our soul.

I refuse to let someone else steer the ship – cage my creativity and step on my spirit for what I hope to be the very BEST and most productive and urgently important years of my life.

This is true with a capital T – and no matter who you love – what you love and how you serve –  your individuality –  and your uniqueness and particular purpose  is an island of expectation and a garden of inspiration that cannot go untended forever.

Everyone loves to quote from the great mythologist – Joseph Campbell – when telling you how to pick a purpose or a path or a niche to pursue.

It’s tired and trite but true they’ll say – “Follow your Bliss”…….and expect that will shine some bright and practical light on how you can take what you love and turn it into a living.

And while I honor that quote in a perfect world – the world ain’t perfect.

I’m not perfect –  and you’re not either.

The Joseph Campbell quote I prefer is a little bit less known – but to me – a whole lot more powerful – and persuasive and truly makes me ponder my place and short shot at this space that has been allotted to me in this life.

“The Privilege of a Lifetime is to be Yourself.”

Because THAT we all can do.

And THAT is what picking a niche – or choosing a career – or pursuing a purpose with fearless and ferocious focus SHOULD be about.

It’s service.

To yourself – what makes you come alive and do the work of your lifetime – and also to others – and maybe even to the inspired idea that there is something bigger, bolder and more beautiful to serve when we do express what we love with care and commitment – with curiosity and creativity – and through collaboration and community.

I believe in that – and it serves me as I strive to express who I am – and how I am – in this weird, wild, wacky and wonderful world we all share for a short time, together.

Bliss is wonderful – but it passes in ebbs and flows with the nuances of life.

But to be yourself – that stays with you forever.

It’s underneath it all – always – it shimmers and shines and shows through when you own it –  and for all of us – until we draw our last breathe – whether we choose who were are – or let others foist their own ideas and agendas and we kowtow to what is expected – that privilege is always waiting for you – the free gift you don’t have to strain or save to buy or rent…because you already own it outright.

It’s who you are – what you were always born to be.

You don’t need to believe anything spiritual – or supernatural – or silly to know that is 100% capital T true, too.

So i challenge you to re-think you.

In the small world –

I challenge you to reconsider your niche.

[stag_alert style=”red”]Who are you? What do you LOVE do? Who do you do it for? What do they truly need or want? How do their lives change once you do what you do?[/stag_alert]In the bigger one – your purpose.  The privilege that is to be the very best and brightest you.

I challenge you to think about MAGIC, and meaning over mediocre ideas about money or marketing.

Lastly –

I invite you to ask yourself empowering questions about how the universe shifts – even ever slowly slightly – when you put what you are into the world.  Maybe it’s just your universe that shifts a bit in the direction of your dreams.

Or maybe there is a karmic connection that is winking and nudging and cheering us all on behind the scenes.

Maybe, there is something else more magical, meaningful and mysterious that happens when we ALL put our real selves and inspired ideas into the world everyday.

I believe that.  I didn’t always.

But the more I do what I love….the more convinced I am that it’s true.

I’d love to help you with that – and if you haven’t done so already – i invite you to connect with me on Facebook – and i’ll give you 15 minutes of my time – for free – via our Campfire private text chat community  – to help you quickly unpack what that may be and allow whatever it is that is waiting to come alive in you – to shine through.

Thanks for reading – as always – it’s a privilege – and if this has touched you enough to share with those you care about – i’d be grateful as well.

I am an author, artist and entrepreneur. My 2 passions are writing about, and teaching Marketing and Meditation. I like to think I’m a lot like Eckhart Tolle, if only he was taller, and a much better tennis player. (it turns out in person, he’s super short, has a terrible backhand and wears this weird scottish hat thingy that makes it really difficult to concentrate while serving) Plus he refuses to keep score and says ” it’s always NOW” when you ask who is up. Enough about me. We barely know each other. Stop staring. You’re making me nervous.
