Re purposing Your Content for Fun and Profit, Article Marketing Mania & Why Recycling is a Great “Green” Strategy That ANYONE Can Master

Over the last few posts, I’ve had some great questions asked in the comments section – and some even more "challenging" ones have come via email. ( I’d actually prefer if they’d be kept to the comments from now on..:-)

A popular issue that keeps coming up is on the issue of re-purposing your content, and how to maximize each and every piece of intellectual capital you create for optimum exposure….and maximum profit.

The truth?

Re-purposing, recycling, re-framing and re-positioning your content is crucial to succeed long term…..if you are using blogs, web sites and social networking stuff to build a business. ( which 98% + of people reading this are)

You can re-purpose your own stuff.

  • That means taking your articles, and turning them into press releases.
  • Taking your press releases and turning them into blog posts and link bait.
  • Turning your PDF’s into indivual text based articles, re-importing back into new blogs and dripping them in over time.
  • It means using popular page rank "piggyback" strategies you can leverage by finding ALL of the resources that will accept, republish and redistribute your stuff for YOU, on autopilot…and this can include document repositories, shareware sites, viral communities, and more…..each turning your content into a valuable "tool" that other people can use and in the process, spread your "message" for you in places that you simply couldn’t reach on your own. ( Some WP plug ins are a great example of this done well by savvy marketers, who will "force" THOUSANDS of people to see their marketing message when you utilize their free, and value add tools, tweaks and other enhancements to WordPress publishing)

But It also means re-purposing OTHER people’s stuff as we looked at with the "flock" post.

Leveraging the content of OTHER people, in ethical, white hat ways that opens up more eyeballs ( and extends your exposre)simply by leveraging tools and technologies that allow it to happen. It means using article aggregation plug ins that will allow re-publish, within TOS, other peoples articles on your "feeder" style sites. It means creating multi-media channels around content that entertains and engages your readers, without having to have creating them yourself.

It means taking a PDF that’s used to sell a product ( like an owners manual for a TV, a product launch "giveaway" or anything else that a vendor will offer YOU to sell MORE of THEIR stuff in creative ways…and often to build entire feeder food" sites around other peoples creative capital.

It means using RSS feeds where appropriate, data feeds, user comments and all sorts of other content that ranks, builds links, establishes trust ( to that site,….or to another one) and overall allows usable content to be maximized in all kinds of muscular ways.

it’s all got to be part of a system…and this dovetails with some of the other common questions I’ve been getting over the last few days about article marketing.

Can you really build a HUGE list, or drive LOTS of traffic to affiliate sites using only articles? Or is it a simpleton strategy that is severely limited in what it can do for your business, your finances and your future?

The answer is actually pretty simple.

You can generate TREMENDOUS amounts of traffic using only articles, and I’ve proven this in my own business over and over again.

But in my view, it’s not enough.

It’s not the end. It’s just the beginning.

The BETTER question to ask is How high is high?

How much is much?

How big is big….and that’s where putting the WHOLE thing into a "system" is where you are going to have transcendent success that endures.

Ezine Articles has a POLICY – one author account per human, and I respect their policy and have only ONE account. (contrary to article marketing "gurus" who tell you to open multiple accounts)

I do however have LOTS of other people that are involved in my business in one capacity or another from a content creation, publication and distribution standpoint, who also have THEIR own accounts, which makes article marketing for us, a strategy of SCALE.

And a strategy that on it’s own, has a nice amount of "gravity" on that scale as you are about to see.

But it’s still…..just one leg of the marketing machine you need to put into play to build a viable, and valuable long term publishing business online using copious amounts of content as your model.

( I say that only because there are people who do nothing but PPC arbitrage and similar approaches – and they don’t need content to be successful – so to be transparent, this ain’t the only way to build a business. It is a damn good one though – and a more reliable one that most.)

Now…..is article marketing ENOUGH? I don’t know what you consider enough – but here is a screen shot from one of my campaigns, mas o menos from the past year give or take, that is sending traffic DIRECTLY to an affiliate program. (i.e. – not blog building, not list building and not looking to make friends and influence people. Just straight affiliate sales)

That’s 80,000.00 hits to ONE affiliate program from ONE article campaign and for the most part, pretty much on autopilot once you get the ranking right.

Okay…..but what about building a list?

Is article marketing ENOUGH to build a sizable list?

Here is ANOTHER article marketing campaign, just from my stuff alone ( not including other authors using other accounts who have worked with me on this campaign) with another 150,000 hits to ONE landing page that is set up to do NOTHING other than build a list.

About 900,000 views – and a pretty dismal CTR of under 20% too I’m embarrassed to admit – but still – free traffic, day in and day out…..to ONE single page with a headline, a few bullet points and a big fat opt in box getting 150,000 easy eyeballs in front of it from this approach alone.

EZA 2.jpg

But…..how high is high? How good is good? When is enough ?

For you it may be different than for me. The above, for me….is just ONE piece of the puzzle. These same articles are re-purposed, re-written, sometimes spun, sometimes cut up and re-distributed and they go on to live many more lives, and serve many more masters than this.

And the beauty is….you can do the very same thing. You don’t need a guru. you don’t need a college degree. and you don’t need to have a long collegiate history with hallucinogenic drugs like me to get the same result.

Here is a very, simple, tangible example of re-purposing your content in a very straightforward way….

I wrote some posts on making money on craiglist on this very blog well over a year ago. ( probably closer to 2)

I submitted a few to the article directories, had a few people who were working for me post a few of them around the web as well, and over time, this blog became the #1 ranked website for "how to make money on craiglist" and all sort of derivations of that phrase.

Many of you reading this right now probably arrived here at one point or another due to searching that phrase, and if you took a look at my analytics, you’d see that EVERYDAY I still get a fair amount of traffic from these sort of keyword searches…..EVEN though I haven’t posted on CL in a very long time, nor have I written a single pixel about it in a super long time.

The content though, that’s out there in the engines, the PDF that I wrote specifically ( which is here under free stuff on my blog) has been passed around SO often, by so many people, on blogs, on forums, on some share ware sites, that even if I never got another NATURAL search result for "make money on craiglist" I would still get traffic everyday anyway.

Look here at Scribd – it’s the EXACT same document that I have posted on here – in it’s entirety – and it’s been viewed something like 6500 times, has been downloaded something like 500 times- ( i.e. – these folks have saved it locally to their machine as a PDF which is the holy grail of creating content that "sticks") and still drives buckets of behinds to this site everyday.

SCRIBD TOTALS.png

And I’ve made a few friends out of the deal, have gotten a few clients and even got a year worth of complimentary free massages from a local duo of very talented Swedish sisters which is priceless, especially considering I don’t get out much these days otherwise.

The bottom line?

Your content is an asset. It has tangible value. It may be borne of your imagination, but it’s value is REAL and if you do it properly, it’s an enduring one as well. Content creation is a SCALABLE strategy.

Graph out your goals.

And when you’ve done something worth shouting about, always think – "HOW". How can I get this in more hands. How can I get more people to see this.

How Can I make this a little bit more unique, more time sensitive, more viral, more buzz worthy, more "link able", etc…and each one of those permutations is a new foundation from which you can build something a little bit more unique.

Hopefully this post gives you a bit of a push in the right direction that it CAN be done….using only what you’ve got right now.  (because it’s true)

Here is what’s coming next

I am Re-Opening my "free" Coaching Offer for a very limited time ( about 2 weeks or so)

Here is what it is:

A ONE time look at anything you need evaluated – your landing pages, your sequence, your blog, your niche, y our keyword selection, your copy…..the details are ALL here, and are the same as when I opened this up earlier in the spring for a few weeks.  It’s a one time, one one one email"audit" of whatever you want improved, and other than the nominal cost of buying hosting  using my link – I’ll do it for free.

Here is why I’m doing it:

On July 6th, I’ll be starting a NEW Crash Cash Creation Coaching Club….and while I’ll share more details over the next week or so, it’s going to be a very small group of serious entrepreneurs who need ONE ON ONE hand holding to leap frog the learning curve and are really ready to make a major league move UP the totem pole of success in a hurry.

Here are the ANTI-LAUNCH disclosures up-front:

This isnt’ going to be offered to anybody’s list, other than my own.  I’m not going to generate a whole mess of fake scarcity, or any other nefarious nonsense to create some sort of wild and woolly wackiness that leads to people who are NOT ready for this sort of investment to make it anyway.  This is going to be limited to a very small group, and will be exclusively a one on one interaction between you and I, with the explicit purpose of giving YOU everything you need to build a REAL business that WILL grow, thrive and prosper over time….in any economy, climate or set of "societal" circumstances that we can’t otherwise control.

But……as I hope to illustrate through details that will be coming….I’m going to be providing access to not only MYSELF on a daily basis, but at the top "level", some tools, techniques and technologies that will make a few of you VERY happy.…at a price that is, in my humble opinion, an absolute steal. ( and less than I paid for the technologies alone on a piece by piece basis)

So keep your eye out for an email about that in the next day or so…..and if you want to put me to the test, take advantage of the FREE  offer today, and if you join the one on one crash cash creation coaching club…..you can even deduct the cost of the hosting as well.

  1. Another great post! The light has recently gone on for me when it comes to re-purposing my content. The multi media element is really attracting me and I’m working on implementing. Turning blog posts into audios or podcasts ~ then video which can then be distributed widely ~ I can’t even tell you how much easier my life/work got when I finally realized I could do this. My work load is so much lighter since I don’t have to create brand new content everywhere I want to put it. Phew ;)

    Thanks for a great post,

    Jackie

Thanks, Jackie! There *used* to be a killer service called SPLASHCAST which would let you aggregate all sorts of multi-media files ( video/audio/pdf/docs/spreadsheets/etc) into a super slick multimedia channel…..didn’t even need to be your OWN multimedia – just stuff that was being shared freely already online. Unfortunately – in the last 60 days or so – they’ve pulled the plug on the service ( although they might still offer a premium service instead) which sort of really SUCKS……but it was the epitome of this strategy for engaging your blog readers in little niches where you had NO content yet…..you just put this tool to work – and in 10 minutes you’d have your own “show” that looked great too. ( had some cool viral components as well – but was really great mostly because it looked so professional – so fast!)

Dear Ian – I always learn great lessons from you. I’m not sure if I’m really ready for a new level (I’m afraid at this point I don’t even have any level!). However, you have provided great direction. From now on, I” start any content creation with the end in mind of re-purposing. Fortunately, I have a good voice that could serve me well in audio files. Unfortunately, some have said I have a great face for radio – so I might think twice about a video product.

I’ve had some great fortune with my first early forays into article marketing including some sales. I’m encouraged by this post to ramp it up. I appreciate your post and ideas. Thanks.

    Hi Ian,
One of the most challenging aspects of publishing informational/instructional content is
to be able to get your message across to the widest range of readers. In doing so, the author must assume a certain “baseline” of knowledge. Generally, authors tend to make information too simplistic, or too complicated. You generally do a good job of getting your information understood by a cross section of your readers. However, I must admit that this particular post was hard for me to grasp. It was sort of “rocket science” to me.
I guess that is why I need your coaching.
    Thanks for the info!

    Mike

Hi Mike – thanks for the comment – it’s a good point – and you are right – a pretty consistent challenge to get the right “balance” – and one that I worry about with each post. Appreciate the feedback – as it’s good to know!

    Hi Ian,

Great post! Sounds like your plan for an one on one will be a success. I look forward to hearing from you on the details. Some how I seem to be in a rut with this internet marketing thing. Reading and Learning all the time and seeing no direct results from my efforts.

Ian: Great post! I am a newbie that has been reading and studying over the past year but really haven’t accomplished anything concrete. I’ve got some ideas about the direction I want to take in affiliate marketing and want to accomplish as much as I can through blogging, article, audio, and video marketing. Thanks for all you do. I was going to post a question about repurposing material in another forum today but now there is no need. You must have ESP. Bob

knowledge , no course business about that. I want too like any other people have make a lot of money but what can I do that about .

I have absolutely no idea what that means. I think it was a compliment though. So thank you!

    Ian,
I have been writing many articles for the past 9 months or so, but the traffic is coming slowly. How many articles linking to a site are needed to get “steady” trafic? Of course I now have started repurposing my articles on my blog as well.

    Thanks a bunch!

    • ian said on July 30, 2009 Reply

      Hi Doug –

It’s just too tough to say….it depends on the niche, the quality of the articles, your keyword selection, etc……(and a wee bit of luck too)

If you are working in the IM space, for example ( which it appears from your URL you are) it’s MUCH tougher to drive traffic from article marketing, on a consistent basis. It certainly can be done, and many do……it’s just heavier lifting than smaller niches that have less competition, and less people “fighting” over the same hyper specific keyword titles, etc.

(remember – a *raw food* niche – for example – isnt’ going to have EVERY person who publishes going to wordtracker or nichebot before they write their articles – in the IM space – most folks know a bit more about how to *rank* well – therefore it can be a tougher slog)

I would do some more aggressive stuff if I were you – lots of networking – repurposing content – using some viral stuff, etc – especially if you are asking about an IM niche.
      :-)
