" I have yet to meet a genius in my business. Actually, I've yet to meet a genius in anything. Once you realize there are no geniuses out there, you can think, ' I can do that. ' One reason I've succeeded is I have this naive sense of entitlement. "
Donny Deutsch, Host - " Big Idea with Donny Deutsch " , & CEO Deutsch, Inc. 10th largest Ad agency in the world
I love this quote. I have read it over and over again - and often, when frusturated with my progress, or the learning curve associated with picking up a new technology, or skill or endeavor that seems to be just a small step in the wrong direction for my intellectual inclinations, I reach back and pull it out from my memory bank - and repeat it silently to myself - a subtle reassurance that I too can do this. And it works. And - to be totally honest with you - I have never watched " The Big Idea" - and if weren't for a quick google refresher search before I posted this to get the quote right - I wouldn't know Donny Deutsch if I tripped over him on my way to Dunkin Donuts in the morning for some java and my daily jelly donut. But the quote is priceless - and powerful - and it inspires me to think I can, even in the moments I'm pretty sure I surely can not.
Entitlement. The idea that you deserve something. That it is owed you. That you should have whatever it is that eludes you still - that is the only ingredient you need to get whatever it is that you truely want. The rest are simply the details.
And now a brief moment to stand on my soapbox and preach to the 7 people who are reading this:
The biggest enemy of achievement in my opinion - and I see this even moreso in the reflective shadow of the internet marketing fishbowl that many of us have chosen to gaze into - is this bizzare and supremely flawed idea that a handful of guys who have experienced tremendous financial success are somehow smarter than you are - or more motivated - or have some secret ingredient to success that they will show you if only you pay the price to pull back the curtain.
It just isn't true. Success if most often a reflection of attitude - and action - and a willingness to work hard to achieve whatever it is that you set your mind ( or heart ) on attaining. It is a mindset - pure and simple. And I have met - and know - quite a few very wealthy people - of which the phrase " more money than brains" would have to be considered the understatement of the year.
Yet - if you look at all of the blogs, and the product launches, and the newest, greatest, biggest and most fantastic must have course of the day/week/hour/month - you will always find this unbelievably rabid and feverish group of " guru groupies" - lapping up the water at the bottom of the pool - begging, borrowing and stealing the money to jump in because their ship has finally come in. And of course we know that it hasn't. And soon they will as well. But there will be another pool - and more kool aid to drink on another day - and so the beat goes on.
My point here is not really to beat a drum - or pontificate about this or that - but just to say - Give up on the Gurus! There are so many easy ways to make money online ( or off ) using very simple, time tested direct response principles that you don't need anything more than the mind you have right now - and the motivation required to kick you hard enough in the ass to make it happen.
Trust me - if there are any geniuses in our world ( and I do part with the good Mr. Deutsch on this a wee bit ) they ain't selling ebooks on how to get rich on Ebay. Or Camtasia videos on how to breed a Meerkat..:-)
And - while back off of the soapbox - one parting thought , and a video to illustrate it - on what true genius really is, and what it looks ( and sounds ) like.
