I love the process of experimentation.
The idea of sitting down, setting a goal and just sort of throwing a whole bunch of stuff out there and watching to see what sticks.
And the amazing part - the enduring, always illuminating and recurring realization that smacks any astute marketing mind upside the head when he or she has finished a particular adventure in response rates is - well - everything you anticipated would work well didn't - and the stuff that you sort of threw out as an afterthought - brought the proverbial house down.
You know what, I'd like to make a small qualification. Mostly because I hate to say, after all of these years of doing direct response marketing, and having millions of dollars in client revenue to show for the years of ups and downs and round and rounds where you are never quite sure yet you think you have a pretty good idea and it turns out you did but not quite exactly how you thought it would………
Everpresent Awareness. That unchanging truth that sits. Slightly out of arms reach but always there. Watching for signs of life. Creativity is Key. And King.
What works is this. And I forget it still.
Say something. Don't stutter. Say it well. Entertain people. Cradle their curiousity. Motivate their minds. Be different. And stop parroting all of the nonsensical nothingness and sea of silliness & similarity that is out there - that pervades the marketing message that bombards our senses with every twist of the head and turn of the dial.
Say something different. Be funny. Be Yourself. Plan it, stream it, channel it or just let it flow. What people will, or will not respond to will amaze you too.

Are Really, Really Good Looking People Better Marketers?
It's interesting because people often ask me if being really, really good looking tends to be a advantage in my online marketing business. And truthfully, I'm going to tell you that while yes, in general, being exceptionally attractive does have many advantages throughout the course of my ordinary day (ie - being able to cut in line, having my groceries paid for by strangers and being free of most local and municipal taxes) it really hasn't helped me build a small empire of 25 niche marketing sites in less than 6 months while holding down a full time business to boot. I guess you could say my uncanny business acumen hasn't hurt - but in truth, it really wasn't that hard to do - just simply learning some basic traffic generation techniques and really just following through on a daily basis. I'd also like to point out that I'm shorter than the average man - ( recent census statistics say that the average height for an american male is 5'10 and some loose change) and I'm just a lick over 5'9. But - I do most of my best work sitting down these days, so I've even been able to do away with the little shoe lifts I used to wear to the office every day that I bought from the Sharper Image catalog. Mostly because my Boss was 6 foot 7 or 8 or something freaky like that which made trying to hit hit over the head with a paper weight a really difficut feat - even though I have long arms and lots of motivation.
